Alcohol can have an effect on anyone but with diabetes it is vitally important you are aware of the effects. With or without diabetes alcohol can make you do things you wouldn't neccessarily do without having drunk alcohol, which is always a factor to not drink it. However with diabetes the following problems can occur when drinking alcohol:
Booze
- Increased risk of having hypos, due to the liver not releasing glucose which in effect means your blood will be low in sugar and can suffer from hypoglycaemia.
- Drinking alcohol can lead to you being drunk, in effect to this it can help hide symptoms of a hypo which is dangerous for you as it can lead to a diabetic coma.
To prevent any unneccessary effects of drinking alcohol it is necessary to be aware of some factors which will help to prevent any dangerous states, they are:
- Try and have a good size meal before drinking high levels or even medium levels of alcohol as this will help to prevent any events of a hypo occuring.
- Speak to your diabetes consultant they may advise any changes to your insulin levels to prevent any events (diabetes related) from occuring.
- Test your blood sugar levels before going out, if your sugar levels are reasonably low have a snack or some form of carbohydrate portion to prevent any hypo from occuring.
